Local information

Gardening in Gower

The Gower area covers 19 Swansea Council wards, from Mumbles and Pennard to Gorseinon and Pontarddulais. Your kerbside garden waste goes out in the council's white reusable bags every other week. There is a winter break, with no kerbside garden waste in December or January. Garngoch Household Waste Recycling Centre in Gorseinon is inside the area and takes garden waste, soil and rubble. You cannot bring a van or trailer to Garngoch, so use Clyne in Sketty with a free permit. The peninsula became the UK's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956.1 2 3 4 5 6

If you are a gardening business5 14 17 18

If you are paid to garden, the waste from that job is commercial waste. No Swansea Council recycling centre can take it, Garngoch included. The council says leaving it at these sites is a criminal offence. The penalty can be a £50,000 fine and/or 2 years in prison.

  • Take work waste to the Baling Plant weighbridge beside Llansamlet. The gate fee starts at £15 plus VAT for up to 40kg, with no booking. It opens Monday to Friday 7.30am to 4.30pm and Saturday 7.30am to 11.30am.
  • Carrying waste for your work means registering as a waste carrier with Natural Resources Wales. Lower tier registration has no charge and never needs renewing. Upper tier costs £184 and lasts three years.
  • For regular collections or skips, see Swansea Council commercial waste.

Questions people ask about Gower

Which recycling centre is in the Gower area?

Garngoch Household Waste Recycling Centre, on Phoenix Way in Gorseinon, is the only one inside the area. It takes garden waste, soil and rubble, but not commercial or large renovation rubble. It opens 8.30am to 5pm every day, and you do not need to book.1 3 7 15

Can I take a trailer of garden waste to Garngoch?

No, Garngoch accepts cars only and has a 2m height restriction. Vans, pickups and cars towing a trailer must use Clyne or Llansamlet instead. Each of those vehicles needs a free council permit first. The permit can take up to 15 working days to arrive and covers 12 visits a year.3 4 5 10

Where can I take black bags of rubbish from Gower?

Only Clyne in Sketty and Llansamlet accept black bags of non-recyclable waste, not Garngoch. Bags containing recyclable items are refused at both sites, and staff allow only limited sorting.3 4

When is the winter break for garden waste in Gower?

Swansea Council collects no kerbside garden waste in December and January. Your final 2026 collection is in the week of 16 or 23 November. Collections return in the week of 1 or 8 February 2027.2

Can I burn garden waste instead?

Swansea Council says there are no specific laws against bonfires. A bonfire only becomes a legal nuisance if it is a regular problem for neighbours. GOV.UK warns you can be fined if smoke drifts across a road and endangers traffic. Composting or the white bags avoid both risks.19 20

Is Gower a protected landscape?

Yes, it became the UK's first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in 1956. It was chosen for its limestone coast and varied habitats. Its new name is Gower National Landscape, and it is still a designated AONB. A small council team runs its management plan.6

Can a gardener use Garngoch for my garden waste?

Not if they are paid for the work. Swansea Council recycling centres cannot accept waste from paid work. A paid gardener must take it to the Baling Plant weighbridge at Llansamlet and pay a gate fee. Check that they hold a waste carrier registration with Natural Resources Wales.5 14 17

Do I need proof of address at Swansea Council recycling centres?

Staff may ask for it, because only Swansea residents can use the centres. A recent utility bill, council tax bill or driving licence will do. At Llansamlet you also need your booking confirmation.4 7 15
