Gardening in Swansea

In the Swansea area, your garden waste service depends on which of two councils serves your home. The city council collects garden waste free every fortnight in reusable white bags. It stops kerbside garden waste collections in December and January each year. Neath Port Talbot Council collects green garden waste sacks fortnightly with no collection charge. You pay £1.75 for each new, extra or replacement sack. Both councils run recycling centres that take garden waste, and some need a booked slot. If you garden for a living, you cannot use the city council's recycling centres for your work waste.1 2 3 4 5 6 7

If you are a gardening business4 7 12 19 20 21

Swansea's recycling centres cannot take commercial waste, and that includes waste from paid gardening work. The council says anyone who has been paid to carry waste, or who produces it through their work, cannot use any of its recycling centres.

  • Commercial waste can go to the Baling Plant weighbridge next to Llansamlet for a gate fee. The minimum charge is £15 plus VAT for up to 40kg. No booking is needed. Open Monday to Friday 7.30am to 4.30pm and Saturday 7.30am to 11.30am, closed Sunday.
  • If you carry waste from your work, register as a waste carrier with Natural Resources Wales. A lower tier registration has no charge and does not need renewing. A new upper tier registration costs £184 and lasts three years.
  • Swansea Council also offers commercial waste collections and skip hire.

In Neath Port Talbot, businesses with large amounts of garden or tree cutting waste can recycle it at Briton Ferry Recycling Centre. The charge is £62.38 per tonne, paid at the weighbridge by card. The weighbridge is open 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 8.30am to 12.30pm at weekends. Businesses must use a registered waste carrier and keep waste transfer documents.
